Looking for your next tractor, combine, skid steer or loader? The federal government’s proposed Productivity Mega Deduction could change how quickly your business can write off qualifying equipment purchases.
The proposal would allow businesses—including farms and construction companies—to deduct the full eligible cost of qualifying equipment in the year it becomes available for use, rather than spreading that deduction over several years.
The government proposes making this treatment permanent for qualifying property acquired on or after September 15, 2026.
What Could This Mean for Your Operation?
A faster equipment deduction could reduce taxable income sooner and help with cash flow when upgrading or expanding your operation.
It’s a tax deduction, not a reimbursement of the purchase price. The actual benefit depends on your taxable income, tax rate and eligibility.
For farmers and contractors considering an equipment purchase, it’s worth reviewing the numbers with your accountant.
Could Used Equipment Qualify?
Yes. The proposal includes eligible used equipment, subject to conditions.
For previously used equipment to qualify, neither the buyer nor a person dealing at non-arm’s length with the buyer can have previously owned it. The equipment also cannot have been transferred to the buyer through a tax-deferred rollover.
That means the proposal could benefit buyers considering a used tractor or construction machine—not just those purchasing brand-new equipment.
What Should You Check Before Buying?
Ask your accountant:
- Does the equipment qualify under the proposed rules?
- Does the acquisition date meet the requirements?
- When will the machine become available for use?
- How much could your business deduct, given its income and structure?
The proposal includes restrictions on creating or increasing losses for individuals and certain partnerships. Eligibility also depends on the asset’s classification and your circumstances.
The measure remains proposed. Confirm the final rules and legislative status before relying on it in your purchase budget.
Find Equipment That Fits Your Business
Tax treatment is one part of the decision. The machine still needs to fit your workload, budget and long-term plans.
